How to Evaluate Diamond Color & Clarity

Diamond color is one of four major characteristics that are believed when deciding a diamond's quality and value. These are known as the Four Cs, and the rest of the three are precious stone clarity, Diamond chop, and precious stone carat weight. Understanding these four characteristics, and exactly how they interact, will help a diamonds is chosen by you that suits your tastes and your pocketbook.

Diamond Color Variations

Diamonds aren't all colorless, but it is the colorless diamonds, called white diamonds sometimes, that other colours are judged against.

The Gemological & Jewellery Institute (GJI) has devised a set of rule to grade diamonds color. Graded diamond jewelry is set alongside the color of control rocks, which can be preselected gems of a particular color.

Diamond Color Grading Procedure

Being graded, diamond jewelry must be loose, because once a diamonds is set into metal the color can be afflicted by the metal we perceive. S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z

Tinted, yellow usually, may improve to brownish. Tint obvious to the nude eye, when mounted even.

Other Factors Make a Difference Diamond Color

Fluorescence

GJI Diamond information and a great many other lab reports point out if a Diamond displays fluorescence, this means the diamond's color changes when it's subjected to ultraviolet radiation. Since UV rays is an element of daylight which is also within fluorescent lit rooms, gemstones with this attribute can may actually change color frequently.

Gemstones that create a blue response usually seem whiter, or even more colorless, under UV light.

Rocks that fluoresce yellowish seem more yellowish under some light conditions even.

Diamonds Color Treatments

The color of your some diamond jewelry can be considerably modified by using HPHT (high pressure/high temp) control. Unlike precious stone treatments found in days gone by, HPHT changes seem to be permanent.
